G Am C G / G Am C D
i jumped in the car and headed out west
down to where the whale fish blow
i stood on the beach and looked out to sea
saw the rain clouds coming heavy and low
They chased me all the way back into town
i ran for cover into the RSL
The dirty angel looked down from her cenotaph
as the rain like daggers fell
Am C G
Am C D
Am C G D C G D C
And now the dirty angels crying too x2
Maybe the dirty angel can shed a tear for me and you
Well I guess she’s seen her share of grief and pain
Seen many a grown man cry
Looking down the hill out over the bay
Searching/Struggling for a reason why
And I wonder if those who think of god at all
Might wonder why in their prime
The good and the bad are taken all just the same
And the living left to do their time
bridge
Am C Am C Am C D Am C G D C G D C
Oh the Southern Ocean
Is a whispered psalm
Now the whales play
They are safe and calm
But without you here
Life is cold and hard
I wonder if the dirty angel
Might take me in her arms
Am C G x 4
——————–
But she stands there unmoved with a heart of stone
As tears hit the ground like rain
The old soldiers and me think of those who are gone
Lost too young to the final flame
The whales play
And the sea is calm
The cannons sit
They can do no harm
I’m not saying that
the cannons on the hill pointed out to the bay
theres still nothing to shoot out there
I looked down over where the children play
its all empty without you here
out over the kids at play
still waiting for the
but the whales wouldn’t put on their show
I saw the clouds turn and head towards shore
getting darker and coming in low
