Everything is fate in retrospect

Love sneaks up to take you by surprise
You turn around and right before your eyes
Someone imperfect someone just right
Someone who dares you to realise

Everything is fate in retrospect
Some call it where history and coincidence intersect
But to notice and to dare take that ride is the thing
To hold your breath and dive right in

And then you think you’ll see each other through
The swirling push and shove of me and you
No one expects the sky to tear apart
Until they’re knee deep in the muck of broken hearts

When you think of everything that might have been
Now lying dead beneath the broken/poisoned tree
When all the anger burns down to dust
All thats left is an empty brittle crust

The scapular and the rosary
The sacred heart and the the lamb of peace
The Mother Marys hanging on our wall
I’m not much of a believer but how I begged then for a miracle

The scapular and the rosary
The sacred heart and the the fleur-de-lis
The Mother Marys hanging on our wall
I’m not much of a believer but I pray now to hear her call

When the night comes back again
The darkness calls up pointless/aimless rage
And all the words we’d saved for the years ahead
Twist and curdle inside my head
The scapular
the rosary
The sacred heart
the fleur-de-lis

The holy cross
The pure white dove
The slippery fish
Platonic/Eternal love
