Lonesome yuppy blues (L)

I love the simple, quiet life

Free from hunger, pain and strife

A cosy cul-de-sac, a picture pretty wife

Babies bouncing round our dancing feet

Smiling neighbours in a friendly street

I see our garden bloom – the food is fresh and sweet

Come around we’d love to have you stay

No finer place to start a brand new day

It doesn’t matter what you have to say

We’re only a phone call away

I sometimes think about the life we knew

Caught in the rat-race, in the human zoo

The crazy mad-mouse we rode from bust to boom

Now as we lie inside our bubbling spa

I think of how our life was once so hard

The old man’s money didn’t seem to go that far

We work at home now in our tax free rooms

Craft work on electronic loom

And we’d really  love to see you soon

Because it sometimes seems like we’re living in a cartoon

I remember all our well laid plans

A moral vision merged with healthy glands

A little piece of earth where we could make our stand

Now every day I work away inside

I send my labour out through space and time

I feel like some new man, but I don’t know what kind

As I walk around the neighbourhood

I shake a hand or two I smile and nod

We could make friends in fact I know we would

If there was just one person I felt that I understood

In the middle of a golden dream

I catch the echo of a timeless scream

I haven’t got the time to wonder what it means

As I eat another wholesome meal

I find I’m thinking of some high ideal

Caught between the perfect souffle and the way that I feel

You’re all welcome to our happy home

We’ve kept a space to rest your weary bones

Just turn left after the twilight zone

We’re waiting for your call heaven knows
