Memphis Wedding (L)

They say Frank Sinatra
Once ruled the roost in the Matzalan Del Mar
All those yankee gringos long gone
But we raised a glass to Frank in world’s longest bar

We headed north to Juarez
We saw the dead as they danced in a death weary land
We shed our tears for Mexico
As we rolled across the Rio Grande

All roads led to Memphis
All those old tunes were sirens’ songs
We saw Elvis busking in the street
You turned and you laughed and my chest was filled up with the sun

Some say there’re cities
You’re either always a stranger or straightaway at home
We settled like homing birds
Felt the weight fall away from our road weary bones

We were strolling in the evening sun
When you stopped and pointed at the sign
Reverend Fiddler births, deaths and weddings
All for the low low price $99.99

Well some things are just meant to be
We walked straight in and laid our money down
Some guy in a two storey hat
Signed the register as Wilson Pickett sang to the midnight hour

Married in Memphis
Whatever happens there’ll be part of us there
Elvis and Johnny singin Motown
A we walk in the noon day sun breathin Tennessee air

Turning left down towards the Sun

We looked for Elvis and Johnny and BB and all
Memphis hummed and drew us in
Saw a wedding ad on a graffitied wall

Did they think we were just some more yankee gringos
It’s former glory long gone
