That one night of the year (L)

The headlights keep rolling through the holes in the gate
There’s a sign on it says ‘shut the bloody thing mate’
And the men have got beer and the ladies a plate
It’s that one night of the year

The lights come shining from the old grey hall
There’s a bull in the distance gives its sad love call
And it’s one dollar each for the band at the door
It’s that one night of the year

Well it’s how’re y’goin as the men doff their hats
Then they go for a beer and a smoke out the back
While the missuses drink white tea while they chat
It’s that one night of the year

The kids slide around on the saw-dusted floor
There’s teenagers trying their best to look bored
As the band begins bringing their stuff through the door
It’s that one night of the year

The Fox family say their g’days then set up
There’s Alan on saxophone, Frank on the drums
Yvonne’s on piano – her hair’s in a bun
It’s that one night of the year

The music starts up with men still outside
So the ladies grab sons and go for a slide
And the teenagers nervously stand at the side
It’s that one night of the year

The men hear the music and start to come in
Lit up by the beer and the jokes full of grins
And the floral frocks join with brown arms in a spin
It’s that one night of the year

Out in the car park the eighteen year olds
Are knocking the scabs off a few icy colds
And some younger ones sip as they learn to be bold
It’s that one night of the year

The Mexican hat dance is played for the young
And they stomp and they holler and empty their lungs
And the mothers all smile and the men fill their jugs
It’s that one night of the year

The band takes a break so the supper can start
And there’s cream cakes and sandwiches biscuits and tarts
As the women swap recipes men talk of farms
It’s that one night of the year

There’re kids shoving soft drinks and cakes in their mouths
‘Til they’re stopped by the genuine threat of a clout
And retreat to the safety of running about
It’s that one night of the year

There’re teenagers playing their different games
The boys mock the girls who affect high disdain
Then go with them out of the door just the same
It’s that one night of the year

The lads crack rude jokes and perform rough house tricks
While the girls hide a smile behind newly red lips
And consider with blushes the hope of a kiss
It’s that one night of the year

The blokes in the cars are now three quarters full
They’re off over the paddocks in search of the bull
While inside Frank’s once more put his arse on the stool
It’s that one night of the year

By the last dance everyone’s up on the floor
Even the bachelor boys are in form
As the Fox family quietly plays up a storm
It’s that one night of the year

Well country folks know that you have to have fun
But it’s never too long ’til there’s work to be done / the turning point comes
And there’re kids to be bedded before morning has come
It’s that one night of the year

After cleaning of dishes and stacking of chairs
The men step outside for a sniff of the air
To see if tomorrow will be cloudy or fair
It’s that one night of the year

In a gaggle of voices the goodbyes are said
As the cars pull out slowly and cows turn their heads
Tonight there’ll be many a bouncing of beds
It’s that one night of the year
