I saw the smile in a young girls eyes, She was dancing slow under a winter sky I waved and winked at her as I walked by.
She said, “I pray that you’ll be my man, We’ll go out walking on the moonlit Strand,” She slipped her icy fingers in my hand.
She kissed me gently and the world stood still,
The moon was rising and the air was chill,
I swear until this day my heart was filled.
I asked her if she’d marry me, She said, ” I’m sorry but that cannot be, Until I’m free of these chains of poverty.”
She said, “I’m cursed by a foreign hand, He’s killed my children and stole my land, Their bones still scream from underneath this cold, dead sand.”
She said, “I fear that you’ll leave me soon,”
I felt her sorrow like a soft sad tune,
She held me tight and cried beneath that silver moon.
She said, “I’m older than you’ll ever know, I plant the flowers under winter snow, I’ve seen fresh rivers bloom and mountains grow.
I know the songs beyond history, They’re fed with laughter and with misery, They’re fed with the love that flows from you and me.”
She looked so deeply then into my eyes,
I felt her anger and my welling cries,
I vowed I’d give my heart until I died.
She said, “I’ve filled the lakes with tears, My heart has ached too many years I’ve felt the savage blows of guns and sneers.
I’ve seen my starving children lay, While the food they tilled was shipped away, And well dressed strangers bowed their heads and prayed.”
I hurled my tears into the cold black sky,
She wrapped me gently in her healing eyes,
She said, “The truth can strike you dumb or make you wise.”
She said, “All the well meant thoughts can’t cure, The hearts still aching on a foreign shore Or the shrinking hearts that hide behind foreign laws.”
The guns still shatter and the cries still roar, The things that matter still get ignored, My opened heart is daily rent and torn.”
She kissed the tears rolling down my face,
She said, “Tears are truth they are no disgrace,
Show them to the world with pride and grace.”
She said, “Stay and share your life with mine, The other opened hearts we’ll find Who hear the music still and see the same light shine.
Together we we’ll go walking down, this curling path along this bitter ground, But we’ll feel that throbbing heart beat all around”
We stood and shivered as the morning shone,
We felt the echoes of the voices gone,
We vowed to sing their stories on and on, their cries are heard we will remember ever on.
